ACCRINGTON BENJAMIN HARGREAVES CE (VA) PRIMARY SCHOOL
We, at Benjamin Hargreaves, strive for excellence and enjoyment in education by providing a safe, secure, caring family environment where all are valued and respected as individuals. We will endeavour to enable all children to reach their full potential, whilst growing in their love and understanding of the Christian faith.
Aim and Objectives
The learning and teaching of history at Benjamin Hargreaves CE Primary School aims to provide opportunities to understand, appreciate and enjoy the multi-cultural world in which we live and to celebrate its rich diversity. We aim to develop children’s ability to chronicle, investigate and explain the past and thereby understand our world as it is.
Teaching and Learning
The expectation is that learning and teaching styles will differ from each lesson and will address the needs and wants of the children and the needs and wants of the History being taught. At Benjamin Hargreaves CE Primary School we utilise many learning and teaching styles. History will be taught mainly through themed based lessons in line with our creative topic curriculum.
As far as possible, History will include practical lessons, with artefacts and drama playing a key part. Trips and visitors are used to greatly enhance the History curriculum.
History curriculum planning
Due to the cross curricular creative curriculum we have history will be planned within a topic. Planning takes place in a year group and all the History objectives are taken from the skills based curriculum.
Assessment and recording
Teacher assessment is the basis for assessment in History.
Resources are held in central stores within the school. Theme based resources may be sourced from local museum loans and the local library.
Inclusion and Differentiation
.(also see SEND policy)
All children have regular access to History appropriate to their stage of development. Challenge for all is integral to our teaching and we aim to encourage all pupils to reach their full potential through the provision of varied opportunities. Work is differentiated to aid children’s learning.
We recognise that our curriculum planning must allow pupils to gain a progressively deeper understanding and competency as they move through our school.
Monitoring and review
The History Subject Leader, SLT and class teachers are responsible for monitoring the standard of the children’s work and the quality of teaching in History. The History Subject Leader is responsible for supporting colleagues in the teaching of history, for being informed about current developments in the subject and for providing a strategic lead and direction for the subject in School. The History Subject Leader will report to the Governing Body bi-annually.
