Religious Education Policy

December 2016

Benjamin Hargreaves is a Voluntary Aided Church of England Primary School and, as such, it is committed to providing an R.E. programme that is in accordance with the aims of the Mission Statement, Trust Deed and Governors’ Curriculum Aims, using the Diocesan Education Syllabus combined with the relevant sections of the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.

We emphasise the significance of Christianity, centred on Anglican beliefs and practices, in the contemporary world. We encourage awareness and respect for other faiths.

Mission statement

We, at Benjamin Hargreaves, strive for excellence and enjoyment in education by providing a safe, secure, caring family environment where all are valued and respected as individuals.

We will endeavour to enable all children to reach their full potential, whilst growing in their love and understanding of the Christian faith.

We aim:-

R.E. Syllabus content

  • The Diocesan Syllabus “Questful RE” is used throughout School
  • The R.E. Curriculum is enriched by visits to St. Paul’s, our Parish Church and to other centres of worship.

Reporting and Assessment

  • Assessments are made at the end of each unit of work according to the Diocesan Standards of Attainment.
  • Parents/carers are informed of their child’s progress in each pupil’s annual report in the Summer Term.
  • A portfolio is kept by the Subject Leader in order to monitor progress across all Key Stages.

Monitoring and Evaluation

The Subject Leader has responsibility for:-

  • implementing the R.E. Policy and the Scheme of Work;
  • liaising with our HLTA who is responsible for teaching R.E. in Key Stage 1 and 2;
  • monitoring and organising School resources;
  • monitoring the children’s progress and standards of attainment in R.E.;
  • maintaining regular contact with the Diocese and attending Subject Leader courses and R.E. cluster meetings;
  • liaison and feedback to our R.E. Governor, Mrs. K. Jones;
  • monitoring the quality of teaching and learning in R. E.

After discussion with the Headteacher and Chair of Governors parents/carers have the right to withdraw their child from Religious Education lessons.

‘The worship and Religious Education provided by the School is in accordance with the Church of England Foundation. This foundation is also reflected in the curriculum and the whole life of the school community. Since the conduct of the School as a whole reflects the Church of England ethos, removal of pupils from worship and /or Religious Education (as parents are legally entitled to do) cannot insulate them from the religious life of the school.’
