Benjis Denied Third Place
On Monday evening (19/9/16) Benjamin Hargreaves' confident team took part in the Accrington Stanley Kids Cup!
The first game of the evening took place against West End. Early on in the match a superb cross by Bevan Bergin met the head of Josh Smith whose goal was controversially disallowed due to the balls earlier departure out of play. Later on in the game a clearance from a corner fell to Bevan, who hit a sublime shot into the bottom left corner. Finally the referee blew his whistle for full time, leaving the team with a good start. Full Time: Benjis 1 West End 0.
Heading into our next game we knew a win would take us through into the quarter finals, Benjis kept their nerves to the side and battled on. After an early chance for the opposition (St Mary's), a break was on with the end result of the captain Bevan Bergin slotting into the corner as cool as a cucumber for his second goal of the tournament. Later in the game, a killer pass through the defence by Jayden Fitton played in Josh Smith, who ran at the last defender, beat him and accurately placed his shot in the back of the net! Just before the final whistle, we conceded a well-taken strike from ten yards but victory was ours. Full Time: Benjis 2 St Mary's 1.
In the quarter-finals for Benjis were Mount Pleasant who were outplayed and defeated by two counter-attacking goals by Josh Smith. Full Time: Benjis 2 Mount Pleasant 0.
Into the semi-finals as the team were edging closer to the final. Unfortunately we were defeated by a goal to nil, with Edward Cassidy scoring an own goal - unlucky!
The team could still get third place and went into the 3rd/4th playoff with a positive mind but after a boring 0-0 draw it was down to penalties. The opposition keeper tipped Daniel Pountain's penalty onto the crossbar - unlucky Daniel, you still played really well! Full Time: Benjis 0 St Mary's 0 - St Mary's win 4-3 on penalties.
Final Position: 4th.
