Welcome to Acorn Class!
We are really looking forward to taking the first steps on your child's school journey with you, and hope that as a team we will make this first year one to remember fondly.
We are fortunate to have Miss.Meakin (Teaching assistant) with myself, Mrs.Jones (Class teacher) every day. In addition, Mrs.Brotherton will be with us for the first half of each week and Miss Fallon for the second half.
Every Wednesday this term we shall have an outdoor P.E. session led by Accringtion Stanley on the school field, weather permitting. (In the hall if it isn't!) Please send your child in outdoor P.E. kit-plain black tracksuit with a white t-shirt and black zip hoodie. Trainers are essential for outdoor P.E. and no earrings or jewellery is permitted due to healtth and safety.
We encourage children to bring a named bottle of water each day, and a small healthy snack, such as fruit, veg sticks, cheese or yogurt.. They will be provided with free fruit every afternoon, and milk once you have registered on the 'Cool Milk' website.
Children will soon be given a book to share at home with you daily, and a reading diary for you to write your coomments in and sign once it's ready to be changed.
At first they will have no words, but you are encouraged to discuss what's happening on each page helping to develop ppre-reading skills.
Daily phonics will star next week, withh the letters s, a, t, being taught, and once children are able to recognise and blend a few 'phonemes' (letter sounds) together, they will be given a reading book with simple decodable words in for them to 'sound out.' We practise 'robot talking' daily! e.g. s a t -sat.
Children will also learn a couple of new 'Tricky words' weekly, starting with 'I.'
Our first topic will be 'Magnificent me,' talking about ourselves and what we can do. We will learn parts of the body and practise through songs such as 'Head, shoulders, knees and toes' and 'If you're happy and you know it nod your head/pat your knees,' etc.
In maths we will reinforce number to 5 initially, moving on to 10 and beyond dependent upon children's prior knowledge and confidence. We will practise counting objects carefully, and forming our numbers correctly.
'Talk homework' will be sent home every Friday, to be completed and brought back to school by the following Wednesday to be discussed as a class. You are asked to chat about the task with your child then encourage them to do something in their book. e.g. draw a picture, stick in a photo or something linked to the activity, which we can then share in class. As they become more able in writing, they will be encouraged to write simple words/labels, and maybe even simple sentences later in the year.
If you have any questions, worries or concerns please mention it to one of us when you drop off or pick up your child. Alternatively, you can ring school and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.
We look forward to getting to know you all better, and making a great start to your child's education.
