Hi and welcome back to another half term! Here is a brief overview of what we will be studying:



We will be writing a story using flashbacks. We will be using our understanding of the Kensuke's Kingdom narrative and focus on when Michael became very ill when he was stung by jellyfish. 



We will be recapping all that we have learnt and using it to problem solve and reason. Children will have online homework. Please visit - your child should have their login - if not please see or call me. 



Basketball and Badminton every Monday afternoon at Accrington & Rossendale college's sports hall. 


Science: Forces 


Topic: Geography and History  - the children will continue to study Accrington and focus on the history in terms of the people who used to live here.

** Spring Half Term **

Welcome back and Happy New Year! 

This is quite a short half term but we have plenty to cover!



We will be researching one of England's famous authors - Charles Dickens - in order to be able to write a biography about him. We will also look at his most famous texts and find out why his books were and are so popular. Hopefully, we will be able to go and watch the most recent film adaptation - David Copperfield at the Vue Cinema in Accrington.



As well as practising our arithmetic skills, we will also be covering:

Working out missing angles

Measuring angles

Converting units of measurement

Studying the properties of 2D and 3D shapes 

Finding the volume of 3D shapes

Finding the area of 2D shapes


History and Geography

We will studying the history and geography of Accrington, studying and comparing maps of Accrington from the past and present, finding out why Accrington's population grew so rapidly in the 1800's and looking at the retail use of the town centre now. 



We will be examining reversible and irreversible changes.



Gymnastics and dance







Science - investigating reversible and irreversible changes and how salt affects the freezing point of water.

Does sugar or salt affect the speed of melting?
Does salt lower the temperature of melting ice?
What happens to salt when water evaporates?

The children were assigned the task to design and create fairground rides using CAM. Lots of fun, frustration, perseverance and determination were on display throughout the week and the children surpassed their own expectations!

Welcome back to school for this second half term!


Just a few reminders:

Class 5's swimming slot on Thursdays is now finished and will be replaced by outdoor P.E. (weather permitting). Indoor P.E. is scheduled for Monday afternoon. ** Please can we make an effort to have the appropriate indoor and outdoor P.E. kits in school all half term. **

The children made excellent progress in their swimming and I will report on their swimming capabilities as soon as I get it. 



This half term we will continue to study kensuke's Kingdom and focus on writing texts that mix dialogue with action. 



We will be studying fractions, percentages and decimals along with mental strategies for all the operations and practising our reasoning skills.




Mountains are the topic of study, including finding out: How they are made, the different kinds of mountains, where they are located in the world and the U.K. and hopefully we might be walking up one! 




We will be investigating living things and their environments and specifically focusing on protecting environments from human activity.

Class 5 have been studying Kensuke;s Kingdom and were interested in the orangutans in the story, so we looked more closely at them and were surprised that they were critically endangered. The pupils looked at the reasons why and produced poems in order to persuade humans to stop their harmful activities.

What we will be covering this half term




We will be studying the above book and using it as inspiration to produce letters, persuasive texts, newspaper reports, poems and a short story.



In Maths, we will be consolidating our knowledge of place value along with ensuring our times table knowledge is secure and applying this when tackling addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. 





We will be studying the last years of the Anglo Saxon Kingdom, the reign 

of Edward the Confessor and why the Norman Conquest happened.


Religious Education

Mrs Smith will be leading the class in exploring the importance of Harvest.




In Science we are looking at the human body, including the skeleton, the vital organs, muscles and the digestive system. We will also compare our bodies with that of other animals including invertebrates. 




Finding out the structure of bones to make them strong - can the paper structure hold a tennis ball?
