Welcome to Class 2

Miss Whittaker is your class teacher. We have an amazing team of people to help us in Class 2- Miss Durkin and Miss Woodcock.

Miss Whittaker, Miss Durkin and Miss Woodcock have had a really enjoyable start to the year with Year 2; the children have been working extremely hard! We are looking forward to a very busy half term ahead, with lots of exciting things to learn about!

Spring 2 Topics

We will continue to focus on History, Geography and Design and Technology through our ‘Explorers' topic.

A space station has arrived in our class as we begin our new topic. We’re going to be learning lots of interesting facts about explorers; explorers from the past, where they’ve explored, the equipment they need and where you’d like to explore. We’ll be looking at polar explorers, explorers of the sea and might even get to try some astronaut ice-cream as we become space explorers!

In English, we will study the story 'The Bog Baby', The story links well to our explorers topic as two children explore the wild and make an exciting discovery! As we read the story, we will practise using 'when' for subordination of time e.g. I put my coat on when it was raining and will practise beginning our sentences with 'when' e.g. When it was raining, I put my coat on. We will also look at contractions, such as don’t=do not, we’ll= we will etc.

During number work, we will once again focus on the four operations with a focus on solving division problems through sharing. We will also be practising telling the time to 5 minute intervals daily. We will continue to learn our 3 times table facts.

In Science, we will be learning about how plants grow and will enjoy having 'green fingers' as we plant our own vegetables.

Reading books are sent home on a Monday,, Wednesday and a Friday. They need to be brought to school everyday. Please remember the importance of asking questions about the story as well as reading for fluency.

Guided Reading lessons and Phonics  will take place daily at school.

Please continue to listen to your child read each evening.  Talk about the characters and what happens in the story, asking your child to re-tell the story once they have read it to you. What was their favourite part of the story? Why? Ask lots of 'who, what, where, when, why' questions. If you have time, why not sign up to Oxford Owl? There are hundreds of tablet friendly eBooks to read online and it's FREE!
