Autumn 1

Take a look at all the exciting learning we have planned for Autumn 1. There’s lots to look forward to!

Writing

As part of our English unit, we are reading The First Drawing by Mordicai Gerstein. This story links closely to our learning about the Stone Age and explores how early humans may have first discovered drawing and storytelling through pictures. We will use the text to inspire discussion, develop our vocabulary and support our own writing as we learn more about life in the Stone Age.

Grammar focus: using expanded noun phrases to add detail, choosing powerful verbs and adverbs, using conjunctions to extend ideas, writing consistently in the past tense, and learning how to punctuate direct speech correctly using inverted commas. Children will also work on organising ideas into clear sentences and paragraphs.

Reading

In our reading fluency lessons, the children will develop their confidence, accuracy and expression when reading aloud. We will begin each lesson by revisiting key sounds, practising important or tricky words and discussing any new vocabulary they will meet in the text. The children will then read the book independently, before working on prosody- reading with appropriate expression, pace and intonation.

Mathematics

This half term, our Maths learning will focus on place value. The children will learn to read, represent and partition numbers up to 1000, including using hundreds, tens and ones. They will explore different ways of partitioning numbers, use number lines to 100 and 1000and develop their understanding of finding 1, 10 or 100 more or less than a given number. The children will also practise estimating the position of numbers on a number line and explaining their mathematical thinking using accurate vocabulary.

This half term, the children will learn about rocks, soils, fossils, living things and habitats. They will compare different tocks, explore how fossils are formed, learn what soil is made from, and investigate how habitats support survival.

We have already had lots of fun investigating rocks and their properties!

This half term, the children will learn how life in Britain changed from the Stone Age through to the Bronze Age and iron Age. They will explore how people moved from hunting and gathering to farming and permanent settlements, and how tools, technology and homes developed over time. The children will also learn how historians and archaeologists use evidence, such as artefacts and sites like Skara Brae, to find out about the past.

This half term, the children will explore Harvest and why it is celebrated by Christians and people of other faiths around the world. They will learn how harvest celebrations give thanks for food and creation, compare traditions and reflect on their own experiences of harvest festivals. We are also very excited to be leading Harvest service  in church, where the children will have the opportunity to share some of their learning with the wider school and church community.

In M.F.L (French), we will be learning about phonics and pronunciation.

IN PSHE we will be looking at families and relationships.

In Computing, we will be learning about email.

In Art, we will be exploring how to use charcoal and different movements to create a range of effects.

In PE, we will be developing our fundamental movement skills and practising our netball skills.
