Curriculum

Curriculum Intent

At Accrington Benjamin Hargreaves C.E. Primary School, our curriculum is designed from a deep understanding of our children, families, and community. Rooted in our Christian vision, based on our Christian Bible verse of ‘Let all that you do be done in love.’ (1 Corinthians 16:14) — “Together, in God’s love, we aspire to shine and succeed in all that we do” — Our curriculum seeks to enable every child to flourish academically, socially, and spiritually.

What we know and believe has shaped our curriculum decisions and offerings:

  • We recognise that personal development is vital for our pupils to flourish within our diverse community, so our curriculum intentionally nurtures confidence, resilience, and empathy.

  • We understand that secure learning builds step by step; therefore, our curriculum is carefully sequenced so new knowledge connects meaningfully with prior learning.

  • We know that aspiration and self-worth are key to success, so we prioritise metacognition, reflection, and the development of strong character.

  • We value children’s voices and expression, embedding the four domains of oracy (physical, linguistic, cognitive, and social & emotional) across our teaching.

  • We know that language unlocks learning; therefore, vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited across all curriculum areas.

  • We are committed to promoting equity, inclusion, diversity, and justice, ensuring that our curriculum and resources reflect a broad and balanced view of the world.

  • We believe children should be deeply rooted in their locality and heritage, so we plan learning that connects them with the people, places, and history of Accrington and the wider region.

  • We recognise the importance of preparing children for life in modern Britain and the wider world, so our ‘Wider World’ curriculum extends beyond statutory Health and Relationships Education to develop social responsibility and moral understanding.

  • We know that remembering matters; therefore, our curriculum is built with opportunities for retrieval, review, and revisiting to help pupils retain and apply learning over time.

  • We believe that reading is the gateway to learning; we teach it systematically and with urgency so that all children can access the full curriculum and experience success.

  • We recognise that background knowledge is essential for developing reading expertise and understanding across the curriculum; therefore, our curriculum is deliberately knowledge-rich, ensuring pupils build the cultural and conceptual understanding needed to make sense of what they read and learn.
